- Do I Need This?
Is it critical that I buy it right now? I can think of a million reasons I should buy something. It looks good on me. The kids will love it. It will show my boss how important I think she is. The list goes on. Be smart – know the difference between ‘needs’ and ‘wants’.
- Will I Have Buyers’ Remorse?
When I get home will I feel guilty and regret my purchase? Will I hide my purchase from my spouse? Will I be afraid to wear, use or give it? If you believe you will feel guilty, embarrassed, or be chastised or have to explain to everyone why you bought this then don’t do it. Back away – answer these questions honestly. It’s better to feel pride about resisting than to feel shame because you let yourself down, again.
- What Comes Next?
Will I get tired of it and want something bigger, better, faster, more expensive? If so, then your money is like a drug. You have to have it to be that person you so much want to be but just aren’t there yet, at least in your mind.
- What Is The Payback?
Will this make me prettier? Appear richer? Make people like me? Get me the votes I need to be president of the PTA? What will this purchase ‘fix’ for me? Usually spending money to get anywhere is only a short-term ‘fix’ at best. If you are in any relationship that can be fixed with money then there are deeper problems that require truthful solutions.
- How Does This Fit Into My BIG Picture?
In the long run, will I miss it terribly if I never have it in the first place? How will this support my long-term goals? If it doesn’t fit anywhere it is more of a luxury than a necessity.
