When we start in business, we’re just happy that people call us and that we can get paid to serve their needs. But as business ramps up and times change, we need to have a better understanding of the market we want to serve. If you’re in business to serve everyone, the likelihood will be that you’re able to serve no one. All of your time will be spent on tasks and clients that you didn’t want in the first place but who knocked on your door with cash in hand. The real power for business owners arrives on your doorstep the day you realize: I’m not here to please everyone!
Now, we all want to be well liked and respected by our target audience. But I’ll offer you this: do you think Zappos.com is concerned with people who say that they can find the same shoes elsewhere for less (as they’re not a discount shoe site)? Do you think Southwest Airlines is trying to compete with reserved seating models offered by other airlines? Do you think ToysRUs is worried about customers who complain about crying children in the aisles?
I’ll say the answer is no. They’ve found their power by saying “no” to the people they don’t want to serve. But in the process, they’ve created loyal customer followings among people who like what they do and how they do it!
